Exploring Zanzibar's Coast: From Bwejuu to Paje and Beyond
After our adventurous safari and relaxing retreat in Bwejuu, we were eager to explore more of Zanzibar's stunning coastline. We set off on a leisurely stroll from our hotel, eager to discover the best beaches this island paradise had to offer. Our walk took us north along the East Coast, towards Paje, a vibrant beach town known for its lively atmosphere, beach sports, and excellent dining options.
A Coastal Walk to Paje
The walk to Paje was a delightful experience, with amazing views of the Indian Ocean and the gentle sound of waves crashing against the shore. We started our journey from Bwejuu beach, passed local villages, encountered friendly locals offering warm hospitality, and admired the colorful fishing boats bobbing in the crystal-clear turquoise waters. The soft white sand cushioned our every step as we strolled beneath swaying palm trees and coconut palms.
Paje Beach was a stark contrast to the tranquil setting of Bwejuu. The beach was bustling with activity, with kite surfers harnessing the wind and beach vendors offering their wares. We embraced the vibrant energy and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. Paje is also a popular spot for scuba diving and other water sports, making it a perfect destination for active travelers.
Shanga Restaurant: A Culinary Delight
For lunch, we chose Shanga Restaurant, a renowned beachfront eatery with a reputation for delicious cuisine and stunning views. We savored Octopus Confit while soaking in the panoramic vista of the Indian Ocean.
A Boat Tour to Paradise
In the afternoon, we embarked on a private boat tour to explore Zanzibar's coastal wonders. Our guide, Momo, expertly navigated the calm waters as we set off for the Blue Lagoon, located a short boat ride away on the island's southeast coast. This natural wonder, with its azure waters, was a sight to behold. We snorkeled amongst colorful tropical fish and marveled at the underwater world.
Next, we ventured to the nearby sandbanks, where we walked on the pristine white sand surrounded by nothing but the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. It was a truly magical experience.
Our boat tour continued to a starfish sanctuary, where we encountered dozens of these fascinating creatures in various colors and sizes. Finally, we sailed towards Michamvi Sunset Beach, sipping on fresh coconut water as we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant hues. Zanzibar is known for its stunning sunsets, and this was one we'll never forget.
Exploring Zanzibar's Beaches
Zanzibar has so many beautiful beaches to explore, each with its own unique charm. Besides Bwejuu and Paje, other beaches worth visiting include:
Nungwi Beach: Located on the northern tip of Zanzibar, Nungwi is known for its lively atmosphere, all-inclusive resorts, and vibrant nightlife.
Kendwa Beach: Just a short boat ride from Nungwi, Kendwa offers a more tranquil setting with fewer visitors and stunning sunsets.
Jambiani Beach: Situated on the southeast coast, Jambiani is a charming fishing village with a beautiful beach and opportunities for deep-sea fishing and exploring seaweed farms.
Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Zanzibar's beaches offer the perfect setting for an unforgettable vacation.
